Driving and camping In Bosnia

Hi,

I would be grateful if anyone has any info %26amp; experiences of driving and camping in Bosnia. We will be travelling by (our own) car from Novi Sad to Dubrovnik after Exit. No real time restrictions. Any advice would be very welcome!

Thanks

Hi.

I%26#39;m not really familiar with this type of travel through B%26amp;H, probably because I don%26#39;t see many people do it.

Since there aren%26#39;t many camps, I guess you%26#39;ll have to find camping spots by yourself. I suggest to always ask locals about possible locations and be careful about exploring nature, cause there are still quite some minefields in B%26amp;H (many of which are unmarked). Please don%26#39;t let this scare you away, because nature is still very beautiful and I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll like it.

If I were you, I%26#39;d spend more time in Herzegovina, the southern part of the country, by some of the lakes or rivers, simply because it%26#39;s warmer and more familiar to me. If you%26#39;d like, I could draw you a map of my favorite place, where I once went to a scout camp, but is now quite and peaceful.

As for the driving, what road did you choose? In any case, prepare yourself for bumps and curves, but also some wonderful views.

I hope I helped at least a bit.

Thanks for this - really helpful. We ended up doing a detour to Hungary but are now in Dubrovnik and are planning to drive from here to Sarajevo via Mostar. Do you know how long this would take?

Many thanks for your help!

Hi.

I%26#39;m glad I helped. :)

Well, it shouldn%26#39;t take longer than 6-7 hours, if you%26#39;re not going to take big breaks. Mostar is approximately on half of the way. The first part of the road, Dubrovnik-Mostar, is a bit boring, at least to me, especially before you reach Neretva river. The second part is prettier but has more bumps and curves. I guess you can%26#39;t get everything. :) Also, be aware that there could be some slow-downs in Metkovic, on the border, because this is the time of year when many Bosnians travel to/from Dalmatian coast.

Have a safe and inspiring trip,

Jasmina

Sure you have heard about the driving ... crazy.. Be ready for windy, narrow roads (and therefore slow driving), yet fast drivers who love to overtake before a blind curve, bridge, tunnel etc. However, you get used to it, so do not panic! Bosnians know how to drive and we have not seen an accident.

Camping, do check with campsite beforehand! We planned to camp in Sutjeska National Park this June. First campsite we did not find, supposedly was in the main village of Tjeniste close to the WWII monument (which by the way is very depressing and we would have loved to spend money had we found it), second one is maybe there (at least we saw the sign for it 2 days later - Suha Gora), the third on (Ostrovsko Jazero) - we were looking for a long time without any trace of a sign to be told at the end by locals that the campsite is only accessive by 4W drive vehicle - so we ended up pitching our tent in the garden of some locals (Note that we could communicate as we speak several Slavic languages).

So I would recommend calling the campsite beforehand to find out if they are open, what are the directions etc....

Great country. Highly recommend Kravica (or something like this - forgot the name) Waterfalls on the way from Mostar to the sea. One of our loveliest experiences!
