Trid33-

Food is fairly cheap in Sarajevo. If you stick to your basics/and some over, you%26#39;ll get by on 10-20KM(BAM)/meal (lunch/dinner) at any of many local eateries/restaurants.

Also, if you are meat eater you%26#39;ll so even better, since cevpacici and different types of pies (meat (burek), cheese, spinach, potato, etc...) are readily available and very cheap for the amt of food you%26#39;ll get.

There are various cusines available, so do not worry if you are not into meat (it will not be easy, but you%26#39;llfind food...)

Also, you can always shop at local farmer%26#39;s markets (fresh fruit/veggies/salad, etc) if you%26#39;d like to make your own food.

Shopping- relative to England, it will be cheap for you. (assuming that you are from England). Depends what you are looking to buy, but I think you%26#39;ll do just fine...

Transport-Tram 1.60BAM (one way-buy at the tram stop/kiosk)

Buses-1.80KM(one way)-buy with driver-have change ready

Trollies-2KM (one way)(or maybe 1.80BAM)-again purchase it inside of the vehicle-and have change!!!

There are various types of tickets (tram mailnly) you can purchase (ie 10 rides/half day/3day/weekly, etc...this is just as a guide...)

Taxi service is excellent-I must warn you, that if you are flying into the city-bevare of taxis at the airport, they are rude and will charge you a flat rate ~20KM -that should be enough to get you to the center-and actully more than enough.

If you have a bad experince, don%26#39;t let that discourage you, regular taxi service is GREAT through out the city and you can get from one end to the other for 10-15KM, but through the city 3-5KM should get you just about anywhere. 1515 and 1516 are the two numbers that I use, since they are easy to remember, when calling for a cab, or you%26#39;ll be able to hail one at any time of day/night on the street. (there are other numbers available, as well...)

Also, read through postings on this forum, there are various opinions on Sarajevo/costs/shopping/etc...

Good luck and have a safe trip.

I agree with Livermore but it all depends on what you think is cheap and your financial situation. For a Bosnian, a meal for 10-20 KM is quite expensive, it all relative. I eat burek which is meat pie, or sirnica which is cheese pie and it costs 1KM, which is like 40p. A good cup of Bosnian coffee is 1KM (my favorite cafe is Jozo in Bascarsija).

If you take a taxi just remember to ask them to turn on the meter. They may try to rip you off but just keep in mind that unemployment is really high, around 40% although its not a valid reason to rip someone off, its just that majority of the population is struggling to make ends meet but I wont go into politics.

I hope you enjoy yourself, I love Sarajevo and it will always be in my heart!

You can eat burek/other pies at around 8KM per kilo (that is the way they usu. charge), which means that you can fill a normal dish with 4KM, which means around 2 Euro. But this is offered in local fast-food style restaurants. Similarly low costs apply to certain meat-based local fast-food specialties, the cleanliness and quality of the places vary, however. In a couple of italian restaurants in the city centre pizza costs between 6KM and perhaps 15KM, a salad around 5 KM (even less), pasta similar to pizza. More expensive restaurants charge around 12KM to 25KM per dish. That brings you to a cost of around 35KM per person for a meal with some salad and an average drink.

Ice cream (which is offered amply everywhere) costs around 1-2KM per scoop when served, but scoops are often very small. The place looked rather inexpensive to me, but it depends also on the place you eat or buy something, for example in the central pedestrian street clothes%26#39; prices are much higher than in stores that are off the main street or more local. But clothes prices, cosmetics etc are about the same as in European capitals, or even more expensive.

Hotels at 3-star level charge around 160-185KM on a BB basis. Taxi to the airport charges 25KM (from historical centre).
