Night trains (Zagreb-Sarajevo & Sarajevo-Belgrade)

Hi! Can anyone give me some info on night trains?

I%26#39;ve got a youth interrail pass, and I%26#39;m traveling with someone who has a 1st-class Eurrail pass (I will pay for upgrades where possible).

We%26#39;ll be taking the Zagreb%26gt;Sarajevo night train, and the Sarajevo%26gt;Belgrade night train. Has anyone taken these? Are the comfortable? Are they safe (how do we make sure our belongings are secure)? Are there couchettes? Is there a smoking-car?

Any heads ups, advice to make the most of the trips, tips for keeping safe and comfortable, for either or both trains, would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Jonny,

In the Balkans - for the most part - there is little difference between 1st and 2nd class trains. Compared to rest of Europe, the trains are pretty old and some can be quiet dirty. Locals much prefer to travel by bus between the destinations you mentioned because the bus is faster and cleaner. Nevertheless the trains are safe, usual precautions taken - lock your couchette and night, do not leave windows open at night, etc.

There are smoking cars - I think practically the entire train is smoking, or people do not bother as they are used to smokers.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Thanks!
