Parking

I%26#39;m Staying in Mostar for a few days and was going to go to Sarajevo for a day trip.

Can anyone tell me how long it takes by car from Mostar to Sarajevo. Also, is it easy to park in central Sarajevo or are there lots of traffic wardens giving out fines?

I%26#39;ve went to Sarajevo for a weekend in 2005 (got engaged there) but didn%26#39;t have a hire car then. It seemed OK getting round by car and everything was well signposted.

Looking forward to going there again.

Hi.

It takes 2-3 hours from Mostar to Sarajevo, depending on the traffic, weather, conditions on the road and, of course, the driver. :)

It%26#39;s easy to park if you pay. :) A few years back there were less pay booths and the fines weren%26#39;t so common as now. However, parking after 8PM is free at most of the parkings.

You got engaged in Sarajevo? I%26#39;d love to hear about that. :)

Have a safe trip and welcome back.

My “romantic” engagement was in May 2005. I’d decided I wanted to do it in Sarajevo (based on my random obsession with the former Yugoslavia) and went for a weekend there. On the Friday night we had a big night out and that’s when I decided to ask the question. I had several drinks before I felt able to do it, but the right opportunity never arose. I had lots more to drink and we went to a place called “The Club”, under the “The Bar” on Marshall Tito Street (which was a very good club by the way).

We left at about 2:00am and I decided to propose by Princip’s bridge, but the taxi driver couldn’t understand what I was saying and just took us back to the Holiday Inn where we were staying. We got out of the taxi on the other side of the street by the parliament building, where I got down on one knee. What with the wrecked parliament building and the taxi driver still sat there counting his money, it wasn’t the most romantic moment, but she said yes.

Shortly after, someone walked past on their way home from a club who spoke English. We told him we had just got engaged, and he laughed in disbelief and said “good luck”.

There you go.

Am I right in thinking that the parliament building has been rebuilt? Also, are they building something on the land between the Holiday Inn and the Unis towers and what is the new big round tower in the city?

Can you suggest a good place to park or a car park? We have two small children with us, so we want to be quite near the centre.

I had a hunch that it%26#39;s an interesting story. :)

It%26#39;s the feelings that lead to the engagement that count anyway, and you sound like a happy family.

The parliament building is restored and looks great now, they even installed some special lights that change colors, and there is lots of white light around it, so it%26#39;s very nice during the night in my opinion. A perfect spot for another romantic moment or even for making a special moment for your kids, to make your story even more interesting, if you ask me. ;)

I tried to find out what is being build between Holiday Inn and Unis towers (since I didn%26#39;t follow up on that one) and found a great site with all recent construction project in Sarajevo:

The building between the Holiday Inn and the Unis towers is apparently going to be another mall, called Alta. http://www.sa-c.info/project/centar-alta/49

It doesn%26#39;t look promising, I hate to see so many new buildings being squeezed in the little green space we have left downtown.

Avaz (daily newspaper) restored the wrecked Oslobodjenje building on the Stup after buying it, you probably know that story. That building is now called Avaz Business Center and among other things it includes Radon Plaza Hotel and spinning restaurant at the top. New big round tower in the city is the second Avaz project, called Avaz Twist Tower. It%26#39;s located near Train Station. It%26#39;s not finished yet, at least to my knowledge. You can see how it looks at this link: www.sa-c.info/project/avaz-twist-tower/1

About the parking, I think the best one for you would be the one by the National Theater. It costs 2KM (1 euro) per hour. It%26#39;s behind the Theater, you can%26#39;t miss it if you follow main street from Holiday Inn to Bascarsija. (National Theater is on the left from the first tram station after Skenderija, in case you didn%26#39;t know.)
